Tarkan

27 01 2008

You may have heard of Tarkan Tevetoğlu, a champion of World Music, who has recently reinvented himself from a rather feminine looking boyband member….

…into a (in?)credible solo artist, in both English and Turkish.

tarkan

Tarkan has sold 15 million records in his career, according to Bulgarian Newspaper, Sofia Echo - and is probably best known for his hit single Kiss Kiss, that was covered by Holly Valance and reached #1 spot in the UK and Austrailian charts and #2 in the Irish charts in 2002. Tarkan’s other hits include Dudu, a personal favourite of mine, and Koca Kafalar. His latest single, Vay Anam Vay, is set to become one of his biggest hits.

I’m not one to call Tarkan a copycat, but this transition is rather like former N*Sync band member Justin Timberlake’s, who has also reinvented himself in recent years.

Like JT, Tarkan has also decided for a change in sound, opting for tracks with a distinct shake-that-booty mentality. Although Tarkan’s dance moves are questionable, he’s still got some serious booty-shakers on his latest album, released in Turkish and due for English re-release, Metamorfoz (Metamorphosis).

Go buy it when it comes out, or download it here.

Props to Anoushka Shankar for making that sitar cry.

Anoushka is the daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, who quite famously jammed with the likes of the late Beatle, George Harrison.

I’d love to learn to play Sarangi or Sitar, they both sound beautiful. I think Sarangi sounds better though, looks less painful and a hell of a lot easier to play. I’m all for the ethnic instruments these days.

Go buy Anoushka’s album, Rise or alternatively download her album Breathing Under Water.
